Project
Background

Overview

The project is conceptual-based and it was our first trial of developing a product.

My Role

  • UX research
  • Mockups and branding
  • Wireframing and Interface Design
  • Development of the mobile application prototype

Joyce also led the mockups and branding of the app. We all contributed to the overall strategy and direction of the app.

The Problem

The statement started with “apart from going to the gym, what do people do regularly to maintain their fitness?” We created a UX research plan that we listed 15 assumptions and planned to find out the 5 things below.

  • Priorities of people in life asides from maintaining physical fitness

  • What deter people from going to the gym or doing exercise to maintain physical fitness?

  • What do people do to maintain fitness?

  • Find out the motivation of maintaining fitness

Target group is the working class aged 25-55.

Process

Research

Primary research is conducted that we collected survey results from 42 respondents and performed interviews with 10 interviewees. Respondents are those who have a sedentary lifestyle and spend long hours at work, yet somewhat have the habit or urge to exercise.

Quantitative data analysis

We use descriptive analysis to analyze quantitative data, to find out highlighted percentages of choices and mode to induce the trend of behavior from the group of users.

Qualitative data analysis

We incorporated narrative analysis, we did so by identifying patterns and connections, after the data is coded, we start to look for the most common responses to questions, find out the similarity in answers, identify patterns that can answer research questions, and single out a few focus areas that can be explored further.

Ideation

Design User Journey

We checked the current trend of fitness app provided in the market and realized that some of the existing features such as food recognition and truth depth cameras are very helpful for users. However, many products focus on the content of the workout classes or the progress metrics without providing mental support on sustaining the motivation through the journey.

HMW

We created 3 "How Might We" questions based on interview insights and the pain points highlighted in the research.

How might we…

  • INCREASE MOTIVATION to do exercise?

  • GAIN KNOWLEDGE to exercising?

  • MANAGE TIME BETTER to work out?

Design
Goals

Our goal was to create an app users could track their habits of exercising and diets. It would also have a dashboard showing users’ body age and workout progress to be shared among the community, hence gaining motivation from peers to exercise.

Solution

With many respondents claiming motivation is one of the greatest hindrances to their fitness goals, we proposed an application that provides a reality check of their health condition by calculating their body age (metabolic age).

We customized a unique set of less than 1 hour home workout plans for the individuals. Users can easily access our workout plans without time restraints. We include gamifications, timely reminders, AI personal trainers in an aim to stimulate the motivation of the user.

Branding

Having determined the core points of the interface utility and problem-solving capacity, we decided to use orange, specifically Burnt Sienna, as the theme colour which represents vitality, energy, and encouragement. Blending the warmth of red and the optimism of yellow, orange communicates activity and energy and it is the best choice of representing this fitness app encouraging people to workout.

With the triadic colour comet/purple, the color palette is chosen as below.

The Product

Many respondents are attracted to the idea of calculating the body age as it was usually not known to many, they also like that there are customized work-out plans.
They like the AI personal trainer where a true depth camera helps to detect the work-out posture/yoga movements and provide real-time audio feedback to correct their postures.

Usability
Test

After conducting a usability test, we received feedback on how to address the pain points better. In terms of the biggest hurdle, the lack of motivation, 2 of the respondents have mentioned that after knowing other’s success stories would motivate them as it dispelled the self-limiting beliefs they imposed on themselves in the first place, as well as to create connection among the users.

Another concern our respondents have is that the break of the habit chain or failing to sustain the routine. Regarding this it is proposed that we incorporate some app notifications as a reminder on some 5 mins work-out tasks and provide pop-up updates of friends’ activity to stir the competitiveness and motivation among users.
